Fortuny Graces the Tables of Dior’s Tiepolo Ball for Venetian Heritage

As we celebrated the 148th birthday of our founder on May 11, another notable event took place in Venice. In a nod to the famed Ball of the Century hosted by Carlos de Beistegui in 1951, Dior and Venetian Heritage opened the doors of Palazzo Labia as a few hundred elaborately costumed guests took part in an extravagant feast of design, highlighting the close knit relationship between France and Italy and recalling Christian Dior’s involvement in the original Beistegui Ball. (Christian Dior and Salvador Dali designed each other’s costumes for the famed event.)

Fortuny fabrics covered the tables, setting the mood for 11 themed rooms that took the guests through distant lands and époques. Custom plates designed by Cordelia de Castellane, Artistic Director of Dior Maison, and antiques and ceramics from 15 suppliers came together in a magnificent showcase of the art de la table. Just weeks after Dior’s creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, captured our imagination with a Moroccan and African inspired Cruise collection, Dior invited guests to wander through the Orient, African, Antiquity and Renaissance worlds, surrounded by the brilliant frescoes of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

For the occasion, Fortuny provided over 400 meters of fine printed cottons from our collection. The colors and designs were carefully selected to not only highlight the themes but also create harmony and continuity in the narrative of the interior design.

If the 1951 ball was a showcase of the cultural richness of the Republic, the 2019 recreation is a philanthropic event masterminded by Toto Bergamo Rossi and Venetian Heritage, an organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the art and cultural legacy of La Serenissima. With Peter Marino on the chairman post, the non-profit celebrated its 20 year anniversary this year. Proceeds from the ball will help restore the famous “Castigo dei Serpenti” fresco by Tiepolo and the iconic staircase by Mauro Codussi at the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista.
